White Willow bark has been used for bursitis, sciatica, tendinitis, headaches, back pain, osteoarthritis and rheumatoid arthritis historically. Other Names include Salix alba, white willow, and Willow bark.
White Willow bark comes from a tree native to Europe and Asia. The name white willow comes from the color of the leaves, which are covered with fine white hairs.
The use of white willow bark medicinally goes far back. Ancient Egyptians used white willow for inflammation. The Greek physician Hippocrates wrote about white willow's medicinal uses as far back as the fifth century B.C. In 1829, scientists in Europe identified what was believed to be the active ingredient in white willow bark - a compound called salicin. Public demand grew rapidly, and the artificial version of this active ingredient, developed by Bayer in Germany, is called aspirin today.
While aspirin still is considered hard on the stomach lining, White willow bark is considered less so.
Besides its many other common uses, white willow bark is recognized as a possible aid in relief of hangover symptoms, particularly headache relief.
