Saw Palmetto is a small palm tree endemic to the southeastern United States. The fruits of the saw palmetto are full of fatty acids and phytosterols, extracts of which are the subject of intensive research for the symptomatic treatment of benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH) and for use for conditions such as baldness, polycystic ovarian syndrome, and other hyperandrogen conditions.

Historically, research around the use of saw palmetto fruit extract for symptomatic treatment of BPH has found it safe and effective. Recently, however, the press has reported that studies have found it no more effective than placebo. This is an oversimplification of the findings. In fact, the studies revealed that for some symptoms of BPH, saw palmetto was no more effective than placebo, but that for others, nocturia specifically, saw palmetto was superior to placebos.

Nocturia is the need to get up in the middle of the night to urinate. It is common in the elderly and people suffering from a number of problems including prostate cancer.

Some research also suggests that Saw Palmetto may slow or stop male and female pattern baldness.  The exact mechanism by which this is accomplished is not yet known.  Saw Palmetto has also been found to affect levels of sex hormones. 

Check with your doctor before you take Saw Palmetto if you are pregnant, nursing, have a hormone-sensitive illness like breast cancer, have kidney or liver disease, or take other medications.  Do not take Saw Palmetto for two weeks before or after any medical procedure.
