Dimethylaminoethanol (DMAE) is thought to be a biochemical precursor to acetylcholine, a neurotransmitter that has a variety of functions in the nervous system, including increased responsiveness to stimuli (increased attention) and memory. DMAE is similar chemically to choline, which helps protect the liver from fat accumulation and is found in high concentrations in Mother's Milk.

DMAE has been to reported to increase attention and alertness, and have a positive influence on mood when taken in conjunction with vitamins and minerals in some short-term studies.

Other studies have also shown dimethylaminoethanol (DMAE) to increase the lifespan of animals in which it was tested, although the evidence of this is contradictory.
