Historically, Bee pollen (also called bee bread or ambrosia) has been used for a range of ailments including alcoholism, asthma, allergies, general health and energy maintenance, and stomach problems. Bee pollen is also recommended by some herbalists to enhance athletic performance, reduce side effects of chemotherapy, and improve allergies and asthma. Bee pollen has been used to enhance energy, memory and performance.
Bee pollen is also taken to prevent hay fever. Some people believe that ingesting pollens will help to build resistance to them, although it is possible to have a severe allergic reaction to these pollens. If you have a strong allergy to pollens, do not take bee pollen without first consulting with your doctor.
Bee pollen contains trace amounts of minerals and vitamins and is very high in protein and carbohydrates. An average sample of bee pollen consists primarily of carbohydrates, but also about 1/3rd proteins and about 5% vitamins, minerals and fatty acids.
Bee pollen is not found in the everyday diet. It is found in nutritional supplements and Chinese herbal medicine products usually as a general nutritional supplement.
Serious allergic reactions to bee pollen have been reported, including potentially life-threatening anaphylaxis. These reactions occurred with small amounts of bee pollen, less than one teaspoon. Most of these case reports were with people with known allergies to pollen.
Do not take bee pollen if you are pregnant, nursing, or taking prescription medications without first consulting with your doctor.
