Acai, properly pronounced [ah sa' ee], is a palm tree from Brazil that bears a purplish fruit slightly smaller than a grape.  While the tree itself has a number of commercial uses, the fruit has a long history of consumption.  Acai is rich in carbohydrates, fiber and protein, as well as a variety of compounds that contribute to its antioxidant and other qualities.
